Special Recognition to Joe Delehay
Congratulations to WCPMA 2009 Top 3 Points Finishers
(9-20-2009)  A special bit of recognition needs to be acknowledged to one of our members who displayed the ultimate in sportsmanship during the final 2009 WCPMA race in Denver.  Tommy Johanns who was neck and neck with Joe Delehay for the points chase, suffered an engine failure in qualifying which basically would have given the Championship to Joe.  Not wanting to win the Championship in that situation, he offered Tommy one of his backup engines to use for the remainder of the race.

I've heard of people loaning parts etc. to fellow racers but to offer a complete high dollar Pro Mod engine to a fellow competitor is pretty amazing.  Tommy did qualify and get into eliminations.  Joe ended up winning the 2009 Championship by one round but his display of competitiveness and true sportsmanship reflects what kind of person Joe really is.
(9-20-2009)  Congratulations to the West Coast Pro Mod Association's top three finishers for the 2009 season.

Rod Pearce - Sets Three New Records
(9-22-2009)

Rod Pearce, a lone nitrous contender in an all blown field, set three new track records this past weekend in Sacramento, September 19th 2009. Pearce and crew attended the West Coast Outlaw Pro Mod Association’s (WCOPMA) 40th Annual Governors Cup event with plans of simply testing their new Sonny’s 5.3 Bore Space 864 Wedge Engine. Conditions were tough in Sacramento with track temperatures reaching a sizzling 140 degrees. Pearce managed to qualify his 63 Nitrous Corvette in the 7th position with a promising 6.35 @ 228 mph on the first full run with his new Sonny’s engine. Competition was fierce with one of the quickest fields to compete at a WCOPMA event with 15 blown entries and Pearce standing as the lone wolf of nitrous.
In first round, Pearce drew WCOPMA Champion and #2 qualifier Rod Burbage in his Spec Rite Converters 58 Corvette for a Nitrous versus Blown challenge. No one ever would have expected what happened next. Pearce and Burbage staged up leaving the line together instantaneously with only a very narrow .047 to .053 advantage to Pearce. It was so close that no one could tell who was winning as both cars seemed glued together making a flawless pass down the quarter mile. In what turned out to be a real upset, it was Pearce at the finish by a .003 margin win. For just a moment there was dead silence as spectators and crew members looked at the clock in disbelief. Pearce had just taken both the Nitrous ET and MPH record in what was the quickest recorded side by side pass in history at the Sacramento Raceway. Crowds erupted in cheers in what was a huge moment for Nitrous fans. Three records in one pass and a hole shot win taking the Champion out first round with a 6.237 @ 231.44 to a losing but quicker 6.234 @ 226.60 mph. Pearce said, I could not believe it. We knew that our Sonny’s 864 would put down some power, but we never expected to take records in the very first round of competition with the new set up.

Excited to examine the data, Pearce and crew headed for the pit full of anticipation. Pearce said, with this much initial success, we feel we can easily put the car down into the teens. The crew hurried to make necessary adjustments to meet Lee Smith in the Semi’s for another Nitrous versus Blown showdown. Pearce stated that the car left hard leaving Smith nearly 4 car lengths behind. Unfortunately Pearce’s 63 Corvette lost traction nearing the big end pitching the car sideways giving Smith an easy run to the finish with a 6.788 @ 200.19 mph over Pearce who had to cut the run short with a 6.871 @ 183.40 mph. Upon evaluation and unbeknownst to anyone, in the pair before Pearce’s run, the car in the left lane put some oil down at about 900 feet. Pearce said it was disappointing because our new Sonny’s engine combination had its best early incremental of the day just getting past the half track. At the same time, we are anxiously looking forward to the next race knowing we left a lot on the table in Sacramento. Three track records is a great way to start.

Kudos to the WCOPMA for putting on a great race and to Randy Kay for the win. In addition, Pearce would like to thank his crew, Ronda Pearce, Mark Copple, Josh Willis and Bob Sandgathe for all their hard work. He would also like to thank Sonny Leonard for the new found power. The new Sonny’s 5.3 bore space wedge motor is going to be all around tough to beat. For more information on Sonny’s Engines; Call Todd Hoerner at Sonny’s (434)239-6972.  And finally, a big Thank You to Dennis Radford.
Vogt Racing Scores Big Win at SCSN V
(11-23-2009)

The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway was the site of the annual Street Car Super Nationals 11/19-23 and our own Dan Vogt came out on top, winning the coveted Pro Street title.  Not only did Vogt Racing pick up the title but a sweet pot of $20,000 to go along with it!

Dan faced Clint Hairston in the final however the Hairston team hurt the engine in the semi-final round and could only post up on the starting line to watch Dan take the win.  It was a very difficult road to the final as the Vogt team broke their new bullet with only three runs on it and had to go the rest of the way with a back up engine.

It was the fastest qualifying Pro Street field in SCSN history with a 32 car bump spot of 6.53 to make the field.  The number one qualifying time was 5.98.  Several WCPMA teams made the trek to Las Vegas that helped make up the 52 car Pro Street entry list.  Those of you that did not make the trip should seriously think about coming next year...it's a lot of fun and the competition fierce.

Final Round Results:

PRO STREET: Dan Vogt (Regina, Sask., Canada) defeated Clint Hairston (Bakersfield, Calif.).

OUTLAW 10.5: Dale Moznik (Surrey, B.C., Canada) defeated Billy Glidden (Whiteland, Ind.).

EXTREME DRAG RADIAL: John Urist (New Mex.) defeated Mike Keenan.

LIMITED STREET: Mike Saiki (Long Beach, Calif.) defeated Mark Washington (Hawthorne, Calif.).

HOT STREET: Vic Brum (Peoria, Ariz.) defeated Tony Aneian (N. Hollywood, Calif.).

WILD STREET: David Schwarz (San Diego) defeated George Raygoza (Orland, Calif.).

OPEN COMP: Mike Matranga (Lakewood, Calif.) defeated Mike Hadtrath (Las Vegas).

BRACKET 1: Justin Lamb (Henderson) defeated Mike Williams (Tilley, Alb., Canada).

MUSTANG MADNESS: Kirk Bouchard (Canyon Country, Calif.) defeated Paul Huizenga (San Diego).

SUPER INDEX: Jaclyn Generalao (Las Vegas) defeated Doug Crumlich (Irvine, Calif.).

DOUBLE INDEX: Ken Spears (Las Vegas) defeated Sergio Felipe (San Francisco).

This beautiful new 70 1/2 Camaro is owned by Rod Pearce! As you can see, it's painted in the silver and black livery and in the true Rod Pearce fashion will have all the fit & finish his cars are known for.

The car is currently undergoing final assembly and Rod will be heading to Missouri in February to load it up and bring it to it's new home.

The new ride will be powered with the latest version of Sonny Leonard's big inch 5.3 bore space wedge nitrous engines.

Rod says "This engine should be a little better than the one we set the nitrous records with last year." Hopefully Rods sends us some more pictures of the new car. Congratulations to Rod & Ronda...we can't wait to see it on the track!

West Coast Pro Mod Challenge - Press Release
(6-9-2010)  We are just about there, time to start racing here at the West Coast Pro Mod Association (“WCPMA”).  It seems like for ever since drivers have had a chance to let it all hang out, as the last event was August 2009 in Denver and with long west coast winters  and cold temperatures all behind us out west here all teams are excited to get back at it.
On June 19 and 20, the first of six scheduled “WCPMA” events will take place at “Mission Raceway Park” in British Columbia. “Mission Raceway Park” has a reputation of great conditions and is known as a world class facility providing racers with a smooth fast racing surface providing teams with the opportunity to set personal bests which is also sets the stage for possibly some of the year’s best pro modified performances. These cars cover the quarter mile in six seconds at over 235 mph.

So far twelve (12) teams have confirmed entry to this event and more will likely attend and compete. While some have been testing during the off season others have decided to save the best for this weekend. Teams have voiced an interest in testing at Mission the day prior to the event to ensure these pro mod beasts are all  tuned up and ready to compete. The WCPMA also has a reputation for ultra quick and side by side racing giving the fans their monies worth each and every day.
The entry list for Mission is strong and looks like this:
Rick Distefano (Ricky D) from Calgary Alberta will be out in his brand new “RH” built blown ‘70.5 Camaro.  Ricky “D” is a multi time national event touring pro,  Denver Colorado’s Tommy Johans will return to Mission with his trusted blown ‘53 Corvette, Nitrous entry Ross Hogenson from Lethbridge has been busy over winter and has some new found horsepower between the Corvette’s frame rails, Perry Krinnet will park his helicopter in favour of and pilot his blown 51 Chevy,  Seattle’s own Yvonne Lucas who is the only female PRO MOD driver on the WCPMA circuit will wheel her nitrous oxide injected ‘68 Camaro into Mission to challenge the guys, other entries include Missoula Montana’s Vern Mills in his ‘55 Nitrous charged Chevy, WCPM’s 3x Champion Joe Delehay with his 68 blown Camaro from Calgary, 2008 Champion Regina’s Dan Voght, Calgary’s Tom Mehedan (who was at Mission last weekend testing), Kelowna BC’s Keith Korecki with his hot Ford Mustang, Lethbridges Wayne Hofer also wheels a 63 Nitrous oxide injected Corvette, and Drayton Valley Alberta’s Perry Thyr has a  wild looking nitrous oxide injected  Z-28 Camaro .

The first of three qualifying rounds begins at noon on Saturday with the final eliminations beginning at Noon Sunday. This is a must see event as most teams have such a busy schedule they will only be in Mission once this year at this event so if you are thinking about seeing Pro Mods in Mission this is the best weekend to go with several top contenders in attendance June 18/19.

Leading the pack in qualifying was Joe Delehay with his Blown BAE combination between the '68 Camaro frame rails. He struggled with his first hit Saturday afternoon, but on the second run, he ripped off a 6.23 to lead the field. "It was not what we wanted to run, but we'll take the #1 spot in the field,” stated Delehay after the run.

There was a big jump down to the #2 spot, with Dan Vogt ending up second with a 6.48@ 216.13 mph lap. The next three were bunched real close, ranging from a 6.50 (Yvonne Lucas) to a 6.56 for Rick Di Stefano in the #5 spot with a 6.56. Between those two drivers was Ross Hogenson who went 6.51. Tim Vogt in the team’s old Corvette rounded out the field with a 6.84/201. Tom Johanns was #6 with a 6.64 and Perry Krinitt with his ‘waay cool’ 51 Chevy ended up #7 with a 6.69. The final qualifier was run at around 11:00pm Saturday night, and the air was as good as it gets at Edmonton, but unfortunately the track temperature was only 65 degrees. A few teams opted out of the last session, but a couple of those that tried, managed to improve their times or bumped in the field. Joe Delehay was not so lucky! He was out to try and improve on his earlier 6.23, but he launched hard went around 70 feet, and then shook and wheel stood his Camaro, forcing him to lift. Tim Vogt improved his time and got in the field in the final session, and Dan Vogt went from #4 to #2. Wade Sjostrom ran a 6.93 but he ended up #9, a tenth outside.

Final Qualifying Order:
1. 698 Joe Delehay, Calgary AB, '68 Camaro 6.231 229.08
2. 547 Dan Vogt, Regina SK, '63 Corvette 6.480 216.13
3. 6889 Yvonne Lucas, Maple Valley WA, '68 Camaro 6.505 217.11
4. 63 Ross Hogenson, Lethbridge AB, '63 Corvette 6.515 213.67
5. 6695 Rick Di Stefano, Calgary AB, '70 Camaro 6.561 188.28
6. 508 Tommy Johanns, Franktown CO, '53 Corvette 6.646 218.30
7. 652K Perry Krinitt, Belgrade MT, '51 Chevy 6.690 212.83
8. 542 Tim Vogt, Regina SK, '94 Corvette 6.843 201.85

Not Qualified

9. 6617 Wade Sjostrom, Edmonton AB, '57 Bel Air 6.932 203.77
10. 624 Perry Thyr, Drayton Valley AB, '02 Corvette 6.944 196.76 206.51

In round one, Delehay had Tim Vogt, Dan Vogt faced Perry Krinitt, Yvonne Lucas took on race one champion, Tom Johanns, and Ross Hogenson would race the biggest unknown in the event, Rickie "D" in the RH Race Cars Camaro.

The first pairing saw Delehay run the quickest ET of the weekend, a great 6.14 to defeat Tim Vogt, who was 200 feet back with a 6.90. Tommy

10. 624 Perry Thyr, Drayton Valley AB, '02 Corvette 6.944 196.76 206.51

Tommy Johanns found his performance, a strong 6.34, and he defeated Yvonne Lucas despite her psychic .001 light coupled with a 6.53 ET. Dan Vogt defeated Perry Krinitt in the closest race of round one, but it was still over a tenth at the stripe. Vogt went 6.56 and Krinitt ran a 6.72. The final pairing saw Rick Di Stefano run his best run with his new car (they were relieved but far from satisfied), a 6.20/226. His opponent Ross Hogenson, repeated his qualifying run with another 6.51, but was well back.

Semi Finals:

Delehay would take on Di Stefano in a battle of Calgarians, and this one had the potential to be a great race. Unfortunately it was over early, as Delehay shook hard and lifted, while the "D" man had a .001 light, left hard had to pedal at 300 feet, got the car back on track and ran a 6.46. The other semi saw Johanns repeat his earlier .30 pass with a 6.31 to dispatch Dan Vogt, who came up 2/10ths short in ET and the same amount in reaction time. His run was a 6.51.

It would be two blown cars in the final.

Would Johanns win his second event in a row, or would Rickie "D" finally get his first win at Edmonton after two previous runner-ups?

A pretty good start for both cars, with Di Stefano getting a .03 hole shot. At 60 feet he was well out in front and looked to be on a great pass. But right after that point he shook and rattled the tires, while Johanns was on his way to another 6.3 pass, this time a 6.33. Rick tried to tame his car down, but after the Camaro went hard right at the 250 foot mark, he lifted and coasted through to an 8 second runner-up ...again!

The win gives Johanns a big lead heading into race three at Medicine Hat in three weeks (July 17-18).

Overall, it was a pretty good weekend, and the series got to run in front of a massive crowd. Most of the teams had some success getting their cars dialed in. I expect two-four different cars for the next event as Tom Meheden, Wayne Hofer and Vern Mills should be back in action.

Johanns Wins Rocky Mountain Nationals ProMod
(6-30-2010) EDMONTON, AB - The West Coast Pro Mod Association were one of the booked in Feature Classes last weekend at the Rocky Mountain Nitro Jam at Castrol Raceway in Edmonton AB. Ten cars turned out for their second point’s event of the season.

A 180 degree turn in conditions greeted the Pro Mod contingent from a week earlier at Mission Raceway. The teams had to deal with sea level maximum hp conditions at MRP. This past weekend they had corrected air in the 4000 foot range and had to work hard to get the maximum hp their engines could avail.
Johanns Scores Victory at Mission BC Event
(6-20-2010)  The West Coast Pro Mod assoc. got a late start to the 2010 season but they are in full race mode the end of June.  June 17-19 they were at Mission Raceway near Vancouver BC, they got their season off to a fast start with 12 cars trying for the eight car field.
They were the feature class in Mission Raceway’s annual “Door-car Shootout” that also included the Pro Street class and Canada West Doorslammers. Friday testing proved to be very eye opening for a couple teams, with Joe Delehay laying down the gauntlet early with an extremely stout ½ track pass that showed his car could run a five if the car could hook for the entire 1320. HE WENT 3.95@189 MPH in the Friday test. Rick Di Stefano made a number of laps and was getting close to making the 36 inch Goodyear’s stick.
Wayne Hofer had bad luck on Friday, as he wounded the valve train and did not have enough spare parts to get the car back together for qualifying Saturday.
Saturday qualifying: Delehay in his first run made HIS statement that he was ready to play with a track and WCPM record 6.011/238. Tommy Johanns got in a great run in the third qualifier equalling his career best with a 6.19/225. Dan Vogt was #3 with a 6.40 and Keith Korecki found a few more hp over the winter and ran his best run, a 6.49. Part time racer Duane Grosart went his quickest ever as well, a great 6.57. Rookie Yvonne Lucas made her debut and went a solid 6.61. Ricky “D” rounded out the final qualifying as he is still sorting out the new car. He went a slowing 6.92.
Tom Meheden had mechanical issues in qualifying and could not make the necessary repairs either and he had to head home early. Perry Krinitt was dealing with starting line issues throughout qualifying but he made a gear change Saturday night and was lucky enough to get in as an alternate for Duane Grosart who wounded his bullet in the final qualifier.
Final qualifying
Joe Delehay, Calgary AB 68 Camaro 6.011/238
Tommy Johanns, Franktown CO 53 Corvette 6.19/226
Dan Vogt, Regina Sask 63 Corvette6.40/215
Keith Korecki, Kelowna BC 69 Mustang 6.49/213
Duane Grosart, Chilliwack BC 55 Chevy 6.57/214
Yvonne Lucas, Maple Valley Wa. 68 Camaro 6.61/214
Perry Thyr, Drayton Valley AB 02 Camaro 6.91/188
Rick Distefano, Calgary AB 70.5 Camaro 6.92/183
DNQ
Tom Meheden, Calgary AB Chevy Beretta
Perry Krinitt, Montana 51 Chevy
Wade Sjostrom, Edmonton AB 57 Chevy
Wayne Hofer, Lethbridge AB 63 Corvette

In eliminations everyone was expecting Delehay to rip off the first “5”, as cooler weather brought down the corrected air to less than 100 feet. Both he and Distefano had their cars set up to run hard in the great air and both struggled at 200 feet. Delehay shook really hard as but pedaled his Camaro to get the win light, while Di Stefano lifted and coasted through. Krinitt took on Korecki, and that one was close. Krinitt got the right gears in the car and he ran his career best, a 6.57 but it was just short of Korecki’s 6.55. Yvonne Lucas ran Dan Vogt and she got her first ever win light in the WCPM series. She ran a career best 6.46 to a quicker 6.44. In the final pairing, Johanns was supposed to race Perry Thyr, but Thyr was not able to make repairs after his qualifying wounds. He got a single but Wade Sjostrom who did not get in a qualifying shot with his new 57 Chevy, ran beside Johanns. Tommy went a career best 6.10 to get lane choice in the semis against Lucas. Sjostrom went 6.89 in his debut.
Semi finals
Johanns continued to impress in the semis, with a 6.12 to dispatch Lucas, who fell off from her earlier ’46. She ran an off pace 6.78. (Crew Chief Mike Lucas determined they had Nitrous issues that kept the activation off until down track). Delehay got the win against Korecki in the other semi. Korecki was thrashing on his car as they had a few head and piston issues. They tried hard but could not get the repairs done in time, giving Johanns the single. He went 6.17 to get the easy win.
Final round:  Johanns was in his second final round in a row at Mission Race3way and wanted back to back wins. He had lane choice, but Delehay’ should have been the favourite based on qualifying runs in the 6.0’s.
Unfortunately, Delehay found a few issues on the last run (dropped a valve), so he had to put in the spare bullet. The team got the spare in but when they were dialling it in, they found the issues with the fuel system (that likely caused the issues in the semis), and could not get the issues resolved in time. They had to give up their chance in the final, giving Johanns a single and back to back wins at Mission Raceway.

The next event is June 25-27 at Edmonton. The Rocky Mountain Nationals will be the biggest stage of the year for the series.

Delehay Scores Win at Spokane & 4th WCPMA Championship
(8/30/2010) Congratulations to Joe Delehay & crew who scored a long waited victory this season.  The final race of the year for WCPMA was held in Spokane, WA with some mixed weather and track conditions.

It was a great come from behind story.  Joe Delehay and his PM Motorsports Inc. team went into the final West Coast Pro Mod Association event of 2010 sitting in the 3rd position in the championship points standings.
"We went into this race thinking we were out of the hunt" said Delehay, "Our plan was to try to finish the year off with a win".  Not only did the PM Motorsports Inc. team get the win, they won their 4th West Coast Pro Mod Association Championship (2006, 2007, 2009, 2010).  Delehay and team did just that and more, after the points leader Tommy Johanns failed to qualify, Delehay and team qualified with a 6.22 @ 230 mph (track MPH record).
The 1st round of Eliminations had Delahay paired with Tom Meheden, who had been improving pass after pass all weekend.  Delehay had to pedal the car after some mid track tire shake to a 6.33 @ 222 mph which was enough to get past Mededen's 6.63 @ 211 mph.

The Semi-Finals saw another blower vs nitrous match up as Delehay faced the #5 qualifier, Ross Hogenson.  Hogenson experienced tire shake off the starting line and shut it off, fortunately for Delehay, who coasted to a 6.861 @ 156 mph after 3rd gear failed in the transmission after pedaling the car twice.

With just 45 minutes before the final round against Dan Vogt, the PM Motorsports team completed a full transmission swap with the help of a borrowed transmission from Tommy Johanns and help from Tommy's Crew Chief Paul anderson.

With points leader Tommy Johanns not qualifying for the event, the 2010 WCPMA Points Championship would be decided on the final run of the last race of the year in Spokane between Dan Vogt and Joe Delehay.  The winner of the event would take home the 2010 WCPMA Championship as well.  Vogt left the starting line first and Delehay experienced some tire shake at mid track.  After three  big pedals, Delehay chased down Vogt for the win!  The PM Motorsports team had become the first ever four time West Coast Pro MOd Association Champion!

"We thought our championship chase was over before this race" said Joe, "Everything happened that needed to happen and we got the job done".  Delehay and team had stellar year performance wise, qualifying number one at every West Coast Pro Mod Association event this year, breaking track records at every event except one, and breaking the WCPMA records with a 6.01 @ 238.79 mph.

When asked what was next for the PM Motorsports team, Delehay replied that the team is contemplating finishing the year off with an event in Las Vegas, NV in November (Street Car Super Nationals)

Delehay would like to thank his crew, Ken Eisler (Crew Chief), Jason Delehay (Engine Specialist), and Kyle Barg (Drive Train Specialist) for another successful season.  Pm Motorsports would also like to thank Dynamic Concrete Pumping Inc. (www.dcpu1.com) for their continued support, as well as GRP Rods, and PitMat USA for their support of the West Coast Pro Mod Association.
