West Coast
Pro Mod finale for 2005
It all comes down
to this!!!!!
Lee Smith leads,
Ross Hogenson has a legitimate shot at the title and
Pat Stoken needs a miracle to repeat.
200 points (one
round) separates Lee Smith and Ross Hogenson and another
600 points back is Pat Stoken. If Ross and Lee make
the final the winner of the race will be the champion
(Lee for sure). Also, Ross has to be the higher qualified
car in order forhim to win. For Pat to win the title
he has to win the event qualify #1 and run low et and
top mph. Also Lee has to fail to qualify and Ross has
to got out in round one.
Friday is a test
day for the pro mods and we will have up to date results
all weekend long. Stay tuned!

Lee
Smith wins the Nightfires from the #1 SPOT.
Photo highlights
here. (courtesy Brian Losness)
Lee Smith Qualified
#1 with a 6.48/219 and then proceeded to take out the
field to further extend his point lead. He defeated
Rod Pearce and then Dan Vogt before taking on Ross Hogenson
in the final. His Final round 6.75 was just enough for
Hogenson's 6.81.

First round saw
#1 Lee Smith defeat #8 Rod Pearce 6.55 - 7.20, #2 Ross
Hogenson defeat #7 Joe Delehay 6.65 - 7.07, #3 Vern
Mills lost to 1st alternate Pat Stoken (who was in in
place of Doug Ballance, who broke in qualifying) 6.72
- dsq (Mills crossed centre line), and #4 Dan Vogt defeat
#5 Scott Bailey 6.61 - 6.76. In the Semis, Smith got
the best of Vogt 6.56 - 6.62 and Hogenson took out Stoken
as both cars got crossed up. Hogenson recovered first
and ran 6.86. That set the stage for the battle of #1
and #2 qualifiers, and the end result was like a jig
saw puzzle fitting together as #1 Smith over #2 Hogenson
won despite a holeshot by Hogenson.
Smith got the
ponus points for low et and top mph and has a comanding
lead heading into the last two events.
Photos will be
up soon.

double points earning race. A vote was taken on Saturday
with the 11 paid members of the assoc., and it was voted
that all racers competing and passing tech will receive
an extra 200 points for attending this event. These
points are in addition to the number of points they
would normally earn for their participation at any other

June
10, 2005
Finally,
the season gets underway!
This weekend,
Mission Raceway Park hosts the "Pepsi Pro Mod Challenge"
presented by the Province Newspaper and Boston Pizza.
10-12 big bad
Pro Mods are expected to compete and take the first
step in challenging for the West Coast title. Series
defending champ Pat Stoken is primed for the season
and knows he has a "Bulls Eye" on his back.
Pat Stoken, driving his awesome 67 Camaro is only the
second Nitrous powered team to win the series championship,
the first being Dennis Radford back in 2002.
For 2005, the
nitrous teams seem to be the prominent ones slated to
run the full schedule, with Vern Mills and Ross Hogenson
(in an ex-Ed Hoover 63 Corvette), set to challenge for
the series title. For the blown contingent, Joe Delehay
and Lee Smith are probably the strongest competitors
that have scheduled the entire series.
The schedule for
this weekend includes a free test n tune for all pro
mod teams today (Friday), and then they get serious
starting Saturday.
Three qualifying
sessions are on tap, starting at Noon and then at 2
pm and fianlly the final round at approx. 4:00pm (times
subject to change).
Sunday, the top
eight head off to elimination's, starting at Noon and
ending with the final round around 5:00 pm.
Here is the pre-entry
list and bios of the teams set to compete at MRP:
Pat Stoken:
Defending series champion tested earlier this season
on the East Coast, and has the most up to date power
courtesy of Shannon Jenkins and "SpeedTech Innovative
Nitrous Solutions". His bright red 67 Camaro is
one of the cleanest cars on the circuit and the team
is primed for a title defence. They are a Eureka Montana
based family operation with Pat's sons Corey and Casey
acting as crew Chiefs. Pat's wife Terrie is the team
manager. Career best #'s for Pat in competition are
a 6.30 @ 220 mph. Beside the West Coast series the team
will race select IHRA national events in 2005.
Joe Delehay: This is actually
the end of an era for Joe and the "World first
200mph Chevy Pro Mod Pick-up. The Dynamic Concrete Pumping
backed team is set to retire its 72 Chevy Pick-up after
15 years of competition. Based out of Calgary Alberta,
Joe hasn't said what the new ride will be, but he wants
to go out with a bang in the Pick-up. Goals this year
include challenging for the 2005 championship and lowering
the et and MPH (6.44 @ 224) marks in the Pick-up. Long
time crew chief Ken Eisler will have the pick-up set
to the max all season long.
Vern Mills: Another early
Camaro team. Vern hails from Missoula Montana and is
one of the original racers of the West Coast series.
A Chevy man through and through he has raced Shoe Boxes
and Camaros in various forms since the early 90's and
all have been nitrous powered. Vern finished third in
the points last year and wants to move up the ladder
a couple spots. The team is backed by Custom Trailers
out of Montana.
Ross Hogenson: This Alberta
based team is set to debut their all-new 1963 Corvette.
An ex Ed Hoover car, this one sweet ride. Early testing
#'s this season have netted a 6.52 best. Ross will run
the entire series this season and if they get the car
dialled in, look for the team to challenge at every
event and finish in the top five for sure. Ross has
another one of the tough nitrous powered cars in the
series.
Lee Smith: Lee had a great
finish to the 2004 season with a win at the Mission
event and a #2 qualifying spot at the rained out season
finale at Edmonton. A new look to the "Blown"
red 58 Corvette is ready for debut, and if Lee and the
Oregon based team can schedule the entire season into
their busy work schedules, they will be right at the
top of the pack at every event.
Perry Thyr: Perry will
step headlong into the series as he plans to compete
at every event for the first time in the team's young
history. Another Alberta based team, Perry bought Ross
Hogenson's Camaro at the end of the 2003 season, and
last year ran a couple events in the series to get his
feet wet. He had a top "10" final finish attending
only half the races. This season, I expect a top 6 finish
at the end of the year. Perry's ride is a mountain motored,
Nitrous assisted combination.
Trevor Lowe: is set to
compete this weekend at MRP and possibly two more events
in the series. If he could get less busy work schedule,
the Fraser Valley Vending backed driver would seriously
challenge for the title. A veteran of the series, Trevor
is a "two time" series champion and the first
Canadian to win the title. The popular "blown 57
Chevy" is one of the fan favourite's where ever
the team goes. Long smokey burnouts and wheelstanding
launches are the marquee of Trevor and team owner and
dad Dave Lowe's Pro Mod career.
Tom Meheden: This Calgary
based team will make their debut in the series this
weekend. Driving a mountain motored Lenco-drive combination,
Tom has been in test mode with this unique Lumina Pro
Mod. He has run numerous 6.70's in the car, and should
be a solid 6.50 competitor before the end of the season.
Tom will compete at all three Canadian races and possibly
the Boise event in August. As well, he is scheduled
to compete at the Rocky Mountain Nationals.
Jay Syvertsen: A BC based
team; Jay drives one of the more unique cars in the
class, a 57 Cameo Pick-up. Under the hood is a blown
'John Scialpi' powered Chevy, that has propelled the
pick-up to numerous mid 6 second ets. Jay also competed
in the West Coast based Pacific Pro Street series and
had final round finishes.
DanVogt: Saskachewan Bros.
have run this series a long time. Both Dan and Tim take
turns driving their nitrous powered Corvette, that has
the potential to be a 6.50 car. Always in the hunt and
a perennial top ten team in the WC series
Wayne Hofer: Is out of
Alberta and will race at three or four events as well
this season. He is another one of the nitrous drivers,
and is in the cockpit of a 67 Nova. A very cool short
wheelbased car, Wayne has been well into the 6 second
zone and is looking for a bit more out of the mountain
motored Chevy in 2005.
Keith Korecki: This Kelowna
BC driver will makea couple of the events in 2005. His
Shelby Mustang was the first retro style 'Stang to compete
in Pro Modified competition. A Huge Ford powered Shotgun
Nitrous assisted motor sits between the frame rails
and has gone down the track in sub 6.80 times. (Note
Keith will not be at the race this weekend as he forgot
about his son's graduation)
The rest of the teams planning
on a few events in 2005 include ex series champs John
Scialpi and Dennis Radford, Kip DuPuis, Rod Pierce,
Doug Ballance, Dan Vogt, Kenny Lang, Dave Jackson, Scott
Bailey, Tom Johanns and possibly rumoured newcomers
Jerry Batt and Jim Demmitt.
The West Coast Pro Mod Assoc.
would like to thank its sponsors for the 2005 season
including GRP Connecting Rods, Alan Johnson Racing Engine,
BAE, KandN Filters, Santhuff Shocks, Dynamic Concrete
Pumping, Custom Trailers, Breckenridge Excavating, Rolling
Mix Concrete, Radford Trucking and Stoken Logging.

Coast series, log onto their web site, www.westcoastpromods.com

May

(update May 3
10:00pm). Forgot to mention to the teams/drivers, "due
to correspondence with the teams in the series it was
decided to forgo the mandatory use of the 'hans device',
until further review. We feel it is up to both sanctioning
bodies to step up to the plate and make it mandatory
(since every other motorsport body in N. America have
done so).
Sorry for the
long delay in updating the web site. This past 2 1/2
months have been very trying for the new personel in
organizing the series for the 2005 and beyond. With
that being said here is our 2005 schedule. There are
only five events on the schedule with two events running
back to back (once in June and once in August). Both
of the second races in the back to back events are only
one day events as well, which is a plus for traveling
teams. This means that teams are interested in keeping
this series going should be able to support every event.
And supporting every event is critical in 2005, as there
are four - six very good tracks that are interested
in us for the 2006 season. A couple of those tracks
include Pacific Raceway, Woodburn and Phoenix. Their
decisions will be based on participation for the 2005
season.

Ross Hogenson's
new Corvette (Below) is finally dispalyed. Looks great
Ross!!!! Ross is planning on the entire WCPM schedule
and selected IHRA and Match race dates in 2005

Tom Johanns and
the "Blown Away Racing" (BELOW) team will
compete at selected events with a 1953 Blown Corvette.
Tom is also out of Colorado (Castle Rock) and the car
has a 526 Blown Aries for power. We will have a picture

the new car/team profiles)
Feb. 8, 2005
The schedule

New car/team
news.
A number of
new cars will be entering the WCPM fray this season,
including cars from Canada and the US.
From the North,
Jerry Batt from Trail BC has a brand new 2002 Firebird
with a nitrous 706 Sonny Leonard bullet between the
frame rails. As soon as Jerry gets the paint done he
will send of photos. Look for him to compete a a number
of events once licensing is complete this spring.
Another
Canadian, Kenny Lang actually drove his new ride at
the season ending IHRA event in Rockingham. It is Rick
Distefano's 53 Corvette he ran in 2003 and early 2004.
Kenny will run selected IHRA and WCPM event in 2005,
and has BAE power under the hood.
Jim
Demmitt Jr. from California will be in a Ford 57 T-Bird,
much like the old ride Wayne Torkelson drove. Its an
all steel body with original factory top glass bumpers
and hood chassis built by Mark Morrison of Rescue Calif
car. For power, Jim has a Ford Boss 429 SVO block 526ci
with Alan Root heads. While we won't likely see this
car for the full schedule, as this is a work in progress
and Jim is still working on the combo and putting sponsorship
and the team in place.
Dave
Jackson from Loveland Colorado owns a piece of Pro Mod
history. He is behind the wheel of Robbie Vandergriff's
legendary 57 Chevy. Dave got his licensing complete
in 2004 and will race selected WCPM events in 2005.
He is running a Lencodrive Automatic in the car and
will be one of the first to compete with this type of
combination.
Doug
and Irvine Ballance from Sacramento, Ca will debut a
1953 Chevrolet Corvette, built by Tommy Mauney and powered
by 737 cu.in nitrous mountain motor. The team plans
